Four drownings in one week across Missouri, and the latest one a teenager at the St. Francis River, reminds us that late summer can be the most dangerous time on the water. The heat drives people out, the tourist season brings unfamiliar faces to unfamiliar currents, and somewhere in between the kids are back in school routines that make supervision spotty. We've seen it happen here at the lake more times than we want to remember, usually when folks think they're being careful. The water doesn't care how good a swimmer you are or how many times you've been in before. Every year we get a little older and a little more aware of what we've lost to it.
