A Columbia man nearly died doing what plenty of folks around these waters do without thinking twice, welding on a dock while the lake laps below. The details are sparse, but the lesson isn't: one moment of distraction, one slip, and the Ozarks claims another person who underestimated it. We treat this lake like a backyard because it is a backyard to most of us, but it's still 55,000 acres of water that doesn't care how many times you've worked on a boat or a dock or a seawall. Glad this man's getting another chance. Not everybody does.
