Fuel prices dropping is always good news for anybody running a boat around here, and Lord knows we need a break—but it's worth remembering that the lake's drawn all kinds over fifty-nine years, the ones looking for a weekend getaway and the ones looking to make a living off the water. That tour boat that went down with those two kids on it sits somewhere in that same lake as the million-dollar lots and the resort brochures, and both stories are true about this place: it's beautiful and it can turn on you fast. Slumberland's been here long enough to watch the whole thing change, watched the lake go from a fishing hole to what it is now, and sometimes the cheapest fuel is just the price of admission to remembering that paradise and danger are often just a depth reading apart.
