Rough week on the water and the roads around here, the kind that reminds you why the volunteer fire department runs their boats out at all hours and why the sheriff's office doesn't sleep much come summer. We've had dock fires that took everything with them, a pontoon that shouldn't have been moving at that hour, a pair of serious wrecks that had nothing to do with bad luck—just bad decisions made when judgment was already gone. The thing about a lake town is that most nights go fine, most drivers get home, most boats stay tied up where they belong. But when it doesn't happen that way, it happens all at once, and everybody remembers it. On the other side of all that, somebody's starting college classes at 65, which says something decent about this place too—that there's room here for people to change their minds about what comes next.
