Ty's Take
There's a particular kind of satisfaction that comes from watching kids you've known since grade school do something well, and this week the Houston Herald's pages are full of it. The cross country team brought home the SCA crown again with Huffman repeating as individual champion, the volleyball squad hit their 17th win while honoring their seniors, and somewhere in there somebody spotted penguins in the desert, which we'll leave you to figure out on your own. It's the kind of week that reminds you why small-town papers matter, not because we're chasing down the big story but because we're keeping score on the people around us who show up and do the work. Fire crews battled a blaze near Success School, the sheriff handled gunshot incidents that could've been a lot worse, and somewhere a mental health commitment concluded what nobody wanted to see happen in the first place. That's the real news in Texas County this week, underneath the wins and the celebrations, and the paper's doing its job covering all of it.
