Ty's Take

Two million in school funding and a new dance studio opening up—that's the kind of week that reminds you Houston's still finding ways to grow, even when the county's scattered across all those timber roads and cattle pastures. The schools got their grant money, kids will have a place to learn something besides football and basketball, and somewhere a teacher's already thinking about what that money means for a classroom that's been making do. Meanwhile Mark Breckenridge and Oneta Duncan moved on this week, like they all do, and the rest of us kept showing up to work and trying not to wrap our trucks around the mailbox. Fourth of July's coming fast, the sheriff's office is doing its job, and Houston's still the kind of place where people notice when a deputy leaves and when a new business opens. That's worth something.
