Carol Ann Knapp Foreman and Clarence Villemez both passed this week, which means two more names coming down off the roster of people who knew this valley before the interstates got so busy, before the suburbs started creeping north from Las Cruces. That's how it goes in a farming town. You lose people who planted and harvested alongside your neighbors, who sat in the same church pews or gathered at the roasters during festival season, and you feel the quiet of it. The Hatch Valley's a smaller place this week than it was last week. That's just the honest fact.
