Thomas Ocie Williams, who worked these fields and knew every irrigation ditch between here and Rincon, passed this week at 89. You don't see many obituaries that don't need explaining around a farming town, but his kind did. He was the water, the land, and the knowledge of how to keep both talking to each other when the Rio Grande didn't always cooperate. The chile harvest won't wait for sentiment, and it won't wait for men like him either, but it's worth stopping long enough to mark that he was here.
