Not much stirring in the valley today, which means it's a good time to notice the people who've built something outside the obvious rhythms of planting and harvest. Down in Las Cruces they're running a piece about a fellow who's split his life between handmade jewelry and the golf course, and there's something honest in that kind of split focus. You spend enough years in a farming town and you learn that the ones who make it through the lean years aren't always the ones working the hardest at one thing, but the ones with their hands in two or three different pots. Maybe he's figured out what keeps you sane when one passion alone can't quite pay the bills or fill the whole week. Either way, in a region built on the land, it's worth noticing the craftsmen and the tinkerers who keep themselves alive a different way.
