Eight years is a long time to wait for answers, and longer still to live in a county where the machinery of justice moves so slow that charges finally filed against three people for a death most folks here have never stopped talking about somehow feel both overdue and unsettling at once. The arrests of former law enforcement don't restore what was lost, and they don't erase the questions about how a case gets cold enough that it takes this many years and these kinds of complications to bring charges—questions that linger in small towns like smoke from a morning fire. Shannon County has earned its skepticism about how these things get handled, and while maybe this means the system finally caught up to itself, you can't blame people if they're waiting to see it through before they believe the wheels actually turned.
