There's not much news rolling across the desk this morning, which gives us a moment to notice what's happening in the culture around us. Taylor Swift's new album announcement isn't local, but it landed here the same way everything lands here now, instant and borderless, on every phone in town. A kid working the register at the gas station knows about it. His abuela hears about it. The point isn't the music, really. It's that Deming, New Mexico, population 14,000, sits in the exact same information stream as everywhere else, and that changes how a town thinks about itself, what it wants, what it measures itself against. We're still here making a living off chile and onions and the work that comes with the border. But we're also plugged in, watching the same shows, following the same celebrities, talking about the same songs as somebody in Des Moines or Dallas. That's not bad. It's just the way it is now.
