A year into the state park pass program for New Mexico veterans, it's worth asking who's actually using the thing. Free access to our parks sounds good on paper, and it should matter to folks around here who've served and want to get out into the Copal area or down toward Rockhound State Park without paying the gate fee. But a program only works if people know about it and if the parks themselves have the resources to handle visitors. Here's hoping the state did the legwork to get the word out to the veterans who earned it, because there's nothing worse than a benefit that sits on the shelf.
