A year in on the veterans park pass program and New Mexico's still got something worth talking about, even if it hasn't made the splash some folks hoped for when it rolled out. The idea's solid enough, honest: let the people who served get out and see what this state's got without cutting into what's left of their fixed income. Out here on the border, we've got plenty of veterans who know what it means to sacrifice, and plenty of public land that costs nothing to protect but somehow costs money to visit. Whether it's catching your breath up in the Gila or just sitting quiet on a weekend, that matters. The real question now is whether people know it's there and whether it's getting used the way it was meant to.
