A year in on the state park passes and New Mexico's doing something right by the veterans who've got roots here, whether they're fishing the Mimbres or hiking out toward the bootheel country. The daylight saving shuffle never stops being a complaint come fall, and maybe permanent time would settle some of that, though ask a dairy farmer or a chile grower what they think about the clock and you'll get different answers depending on the season. And Sam Neill, who gave us that moment in the first Jurassic picture that made dinosaurs feel real again, is gone at seventy-eight, which lands different when you've watched some of those old movies with your kids on a Friday night out here where the sky still goes dark enough to see what's actually out there.

New Mexico marks one year of State Park passes for veterans
New Mexico has issued free, lifetime state park passes to more than 11,000 veterans since launching the benefit a year ago on July 1, 2025. Under House Bill 161, eligible veterans now enjoy unlimited access to all 35 New Mexico State Parks for day-use and camping at no cost.
