Ty's Take
Zoning fights usually bore people senseless until they can't afford their rent anymore. The city council's pushback on duplexes in N3 neighborhoods says something true about how we're thinking—or not thinking—about growth in Billings. We've got people moving here because of jobs and space, we've got young families getting priced out, and we've got established neighborhoods worried about character. Those aren't incompatible concerns, but they sure act like it when you're sitting around a planning table. The real question isn't whether duplexes belong in some pocket of the Heights; it's whether we're going to make any hard choices about density and affordability, or just keep kicking the can while the city spreads thinner and costs climb higher.
