Ty's Take

There's a lot of noise this week about land use and what Billings owes itself—the meat locker lot decision, the data center megawatts heading out toward Bonner, the city trying to sweeten the deal for first-time homebuyers. Underneath it all is the same question this region's been wrestling with for twenty years: growth or character, and whether anybody gets to have both. The young firefighter-business student and the folks writing letters to the editor and the neighbors we're burying today all had a stake in that answer. Billings is big enough now that we don't make these calls the way we used to—everybody knowing everybody. That's progress. But it also means we've got to be sharper about saying what we actually want, before the decisions get made for us.
