Ty's Take

Fire season's already tightening its grip on the San Luis Valley, and that nine-acre burn on Schrader Creek up near Del Norte is a reminder that we're heading into the dry months whether we feel ready or not. The Rio Grande National Forest has been bone-dry for weeks now, and one lightning strike or careless campfire can go from nothing to everything in an afternoon. Meanwhile, down in South Fork they're wrestling with something that might shape the valley's future in a different way, data centers being the kind of development that doesn't burn but does change water use and power grids in ways most small towns are still figuring out. Both stories are about what this country can and cannot absorb. Fire takes what's already here. Growth, if it comes the wrong way, changes what stays here. Worth paying attention to either direction.
