Ty's Take

Fire season's already knocking on the door up in those high parks, and Schrader Creek near Del Norte is proving it. Nine acres on the Rio Grande National Forest doesn't sound like much until you remember how fast things move at that elevation when the wind picks up, and how thin the crews get when fires start piling up across the valley. This time of year we're all keeping one eye on the moisture reports and another on the horizon, because water's been tight enough already without smoke making the rounds. Down in South Fork they're doing some hard thinking about data centers, which is the kind of economic bet that keeps county commissioners up at night, but you can't blame them for wondering what comes next when the old ways of making a living keep getting tighter. Antonito and the valley know better than most that water and fire don't leave room for much else.
