The fence that's been dividing neighbors and wildlife biologists up in La Sierra for the better part of a year finally has some science behind it, and that's both good news and the kind of news that doesn't settle much in a place like this. The study backs up what the ranchers already know and what the conservation folks have been saying, which means somebody's going to have to give ground, and ground around here is worth more than most arguments. Up the valley in Del Norte they're holding another workshop about recreation on the national forest, the kind of planning session that sounds dry until you remember it's about who gets to use what land and when, and in a valley where water and access are the same as currency, those conversations matter more than they sound.
