Ty's Take
Starting next month, any kid in Colorado with a learner's permit is going to face some tighter rules about when they can drive and who can ride along, and frankly, it's about time somebody took a hard look at how we've been letting teenagers loose on these valley roads. The new restrictions on night driving and passenger limits sound like bureaucracy until you've sat through a few too many funerals in this county, or until you're the parent white-knuckling it in the passenger seat while your sixteen-year-old navigates the I-285 corridor in a snowstorm. Meanwhile, it's worth noting that some of our local employers have been thinking about accessibility and inclusion long before the state mandated anything, which says something about the character of the people running things around here. When you're a small-town operation, you can't afford the kind of dead weight that comes from not making room for people with disabilities to do real work, so maybe we don't need to wait for awareness months to remember that good business and good community are the same thing.
