Heat like this doesn't come and go in the valley, it settles in and stays awhile once we get to late summer, and at this elevation it hits different than down on the Front Range. The real concern isn't just keeping cool, though Lord knows our seniors at the Mercadillo event this week will appreciate the shade and the company more than usual. What matters is making sure folks check on their neighbors, especially the ones living alone on the older blocks around town. Adams State keeps the valley young, but we've got plenty of folks who remember when this place was even hotter and drier, and they know the score. Heat's democratic but it's not kind to anybody, and it's kindest to none of us when we're not looking out for each other.
