The Alamosa water case heading back to trial is about as close as we get to watching the San Luis Valley's future argued out in open court. These fights over the Rio Grande never really end, they just shift from one courtroom to another, and this one's been grinding along long enough that people who started following it have kids in high school now. The city needs the water, the farmers downstream need it just as bad, and somewhere in between is a judge trying to make sense of rights that date back centuries and compact agreements that don't leave much room for compromise. Water law in Colorado isn't really about water, not at the bottom of it. It's about survival, and who gets to decide what that looks like for the next generation.
