You spend enough years in a high-altitude valley and you learn to look up. The stars here aren't some tourist attraction you schedule around a busy week, they're part of the rhythm, same as the seasons and the water flow down the Rio Grande. The Perseid shower reminds us that August nights at 7,500 feet still offer something free and genuine, which matters more the older you get. Then we go and stick cameras on our corners to catch folks rolling through town three miles over the limit, and you wonder what we're really watching for anymore. Maybe both things can be true in a place like this: we need the sky, and we need the speed limit enforced. But one of those things cost us nothing and made us stop moving for a minute.
