The Rio Grande commissioners made the right call this week, at least for now, telling the data center people no thanks. You can understand the pitch, sure: jobs, tax base, promise of progress in a valley that's seen plenty of hard times. But this is water country, and water is the one thing you don't get back once it's gone. The commissioners know what their grandfathers knew, what we're all learning again in the dry years: you don't trade the thing that keeps you alive for the thing that might pay the bills next quarter. The outdoor report says it's a good week to get up high where it's cool, and that's the real economy around here anyway, the one that doesn't need a power bill to justify itself.

Rio Grande commissioners say no for now to data centers

Rio Grande County commissioners unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data centers and adopted a resolution banning hyperscale data centers from the county. The action gives county departments time to update land use codes that currently lack specific regulations for data center development.
