The county commissioners are putting term limits on the DA ballot this fall, which means come November, voters here get to weigh in on how long one person should hold that office. It's the kind of local governance question that doesn't make statewide news but shapes everything about how a valley town actually works, day to day. Meanwhile, out in Creede and down the valley generally, the drought's been pushing bears and other wildlife into places they shouldn't be, and now CPW is closing stretches of the Rio Grande to fishing just to give the fish and whatever else depends on that water a fighting chance. We've fought over Rio Grande water for four centuries in this valley, Spanish colonial times straight through to now, and you can see in these stories how that fight never really ends, it just changes shape. You close a fishing access to save the river, you vote on whether your prosecutor stays or goes, and somewhere up in the high country a hungry yearling wanders down because there's nothing left up there to eat.
