Ty's Take
Maxine Baker taught English at Alamosa High for thirty-two years, and if you went to school here anytime in the last three decades, she probably marked up something you wrote in red pen and made you better for it. The valley loses someone like that and you feel it in the hallways, in the coffee shops, in the way a whole generation of kids who are now running businesses and raising families of their own remember exactly how she made them care about words. Cinco de Mayo comes around again this weekend up in Monte Vista—the sixth year running—and the potatoes are still growing in fields that depend on every drop of water we can get out of the Rio Grande. Life moves forward in the San Luis Valley the way it always has, one season blending into the next, but some people leave a mark that doesn't fade when the weather changes.
