Ty's Take

El Rito Media's haul of 43 awards up in Santa Fe last week is the kind of thing that gets overlooked in a town this size, but it shouldn't. These papers, including our own, won for reporting on everything from schools to courts to the kind of municipal neglect that takes real digging to expose. Meanwhile, the story about the man charged with draining a dead woman's accounts reminds us why that reporting matters in the first place. Small-town journalism doesn't pay like the big metros, and the staffing gets tighter every year, but the work of holding people accountable doesn't get any less important just because Alamogordo isn't on the national radar. And sure, there's a dog named Guero waiting at the shelter who probably doesn't care much about journalism or fraud or any of it, just wants someone to take him home. That's the job too, I guess.
