The Supreme Court's halt on Project Jupiter stings different out here than it might in other towns, because we've been chasing the space economy like a man chasing water in the desert for years now. Tourism dollars, jobs, the whole promise of turning Alamogordo into something more than a military town, that was the dream attached to it. But the court looked at what we actually have, the air moving through the Tularosa Basin and the water we're already short on, and said no. That's the hard kind of clarity you don't always want to hear, but it's the kind you'd better listen to if you plan on being here ten years from now.
