Tularosa's water emergency doesn't make the news just because the basin's dry, though God knows it is. It makes the news because somebody finally had to say it out loud, call it what it is, and ask the state for help. Meanwhile, we're opening a new middle school here in town and talking about airsoft ranges and football districts like the ground under our feet isn't shrinking. None of that's wrong, exactly. Life goes on, kids need schools, people need something to do on a Saturday. But any editor who's been around the Tularosa Basin long enough knows that water fights are the only fights that matter in the end, and when your neighbor declares a state of emergency, you're not really looking at their problem. You're looking at yours.
