Ty's Take
Steve Pearce's confirmation as BLM director doesn't get much ink in towns like ours, but out here it matters more than most people realize. The man's got New Mexico running through his veins—former congressman, former state party chairman, knows the water wars and the land disputes like he lived them, which he has. When the federal government controls most of what you see from your back porch, who sits in that chair in Washington isn't some abstract thing. Pearce says he's enjoying the work, and maybe that's just politician talk, but this county's got enough skin in the game—military land, missile range, monument debates, grazing rights—that we'll be watching to see if those words mean anything. A man who knows the Tularosa Basin doesn't come to that job blind.
