There's something about spring that brings the old fishermen out of the woodwork around here, and somebody down at the paper thought to chase that story. Fair enough—because if you've lived long enough in the basin, you know that a good fishing trip isn't really about the catch. It's about getting away from the noise of the base, the endless talk of water rights and growth, the weight of living in a town that's always caught between what it was and what somebody thinks it should be. A morning on the water, a cooler of beer, maybe your oldest friend from high school who still lives three miles out like his father did—that clears the head. The desert doesn't change much, even when everything else does.
