Screwworms in Lea County and car seats in Otero—not the kind of headlines that grab national attention, but they're the ones that keep a rural county breathing easy or holding its breath. The state's moving fast on the screwworm case, which is smart; livestock losses out here can crater a family operation in weeks, and ranchers know it. Meanwhile, somebody down at the health department had the sense to set up that car seat clinic, because a buckled kid is a kid who makes it home, and that matters more than any press release.
