Ty's Take
When a small paper loses an editor and gains one in the same breath, you're looking at the kind of transition that either steadies a ship or rocks it hard—and in a town this size, everybody knows which way the current's running within about a week. Spencer Fordin stepping into the managing editor chair means someone believed this newsroom still has work to do, still has stories worth chasing in a county where half the economy runs on classified contracts and the other half on water that nobody quite agrees belongs to them. Meanwhile, Trina Thomas moving into the El Rito account role reminds us that the small-town papers that survive aren't the ones doing journalism in a vacuum; they're the ones keeping real roots in the business community and understanding that survival means earning trust on both sides of the ledger. It's not glamorous work. But then again, Alamogordo's never needed glamorous—it's needed reliable. That's what we're watching for.
