Water's the thread running through everything we do around here, and that hearing on the Copper Flat Mine coming up on the 17th is going to test whether we've learned anything about what we can and can't afford to give away. We've watched Elephant Butte drop low enough to worry about, we've seen the Rio Grande get stingy in dry years, and now somebody wants to punch a hole in the ground and pull out copper while promising it won't touch our water supply. Maybe that's true. Maybe it isn't. But the folks who show up to that hearing, the ones who ask the hard questions instead of just hoping for jobs and tax revenue, those are the ones doing the work that matters. The Hatch Chile Festival will bring some good money and good eating to the valley, Girl Scouts will have a nice free day out in September, and the Tigers will keep pushing through fall sports the way they do every year. But water is different. Water is what decides whether this town survives the next thirty years.
