The lockdown at Silver schools Tuesday hit different than the drills. When a teacher gets arrested on campus, even briefly, parents get calls and kids get scared, and you can't blame either one. By afternoon it was over, the building was secure, and life moved on the way it does in towns this size where most everybody knows most everybody else. But that couple of hours sits in people's stomachs. Meanwhile, down the street, folks are getting ready for Xantolo, the Day of the Dead celebration that's become something Silver City does well, mixing Mexican tradition with our arts community's particular spin on things. Music and dance and remembering the dead, the way humans have always handled loss. Maybe we need both, the reminder that safety matters and the reminder that living, celebrating, holding onto culture, matters just as much.
