Ty's Take

Early morning fires hit twice this week—once in town at the Furniture Gallery, once out in the brush near Highway 90—which around here is usually a reminder that Silver City sits in two different worlds at once. Downtown, we've got the galleries and the coffee shops and the university crowd, all doing their thing in brick buildings that have seen a hundred years. Then you drive twenty minutes out, and it's high desert, grass that goes dry by June, fire danger that doesn't care much about city limits. Both fires got handled, both got contained, which says something good about our volunteer crews and the folks who run them. But it's worth remembering that a town like ours doesn't get to choose just one risk or the other—we live inside both, and some days they both show up the same morning.
