Ty's Take

The news out of Washington on the Forest Service budget cuts hits different when you're sitting in a town that exists because of what grows on those mountains—timber, water, recreation, all of it tied to how the feds manage what's up there. Meanwhile, the Pryor Mountain wild horse plan moves forward, and you've got to wonder if anyone in the budget meetings thought about what happens when you reduce the agency that's supposed to manage both the resources and the conflicts between folks who want different things from the same land. Red Lodge knows how this works. We've lived it. The town corner by corner builds on stable ground, and that ground depends on decisions being made by people with enough resources to make them thoughtfully instead of by default.
