Ty's Take

The East Side Fire sitting at 32 percent containment is the kind of number that doesn't tell you much until you've lived through fire season in this country—then it tells you everything. We've got unified command on it, which is good, we've got moisture in the forecast, which is better, but we're also heading into August with the high country still dry and the tourist season running full throttle on the highways. This time of year, Red Lodge holds its breath a little different than spring or fall. The Beartooth's been our lifeline and our gamble both, and right now it's just one wayward spark away from becoming something nobody wants to think about.
