Ty's Take

The duathlon coming up in July is one of those things that says something true about a town—whether people still believe enough in the place to show up, sweat through it together, and call it a good Saturday morning. Eighteen years running now, which in a county of our size means the race has outlasted at least two recessions, a couple of drought cycles, and the kind of turnover that empties out most community traditions. You see the same names in the results year after year, but you also see new ones, which matters. It's easy to get cynical about what Pagosa's becoming—the second homes, the pipeline of out-of-state money, the way things change faster than they used to. A morning where locals and visitors line up together to run through the high country anyway, knowing full well who's training to beat whom, that's still the real thing.
