Small-town economics run on trust, and trust runs on small gestures that mostly go unnoticed until the day someone decides it doesn't anymore. That story about the customer walking out with cups and silverware instead of a refund isn't really about petty theft or a business owner's frustration, though those things are real enough. It's what happens when the handshake stops working, when somebody on one side of the counter decides the other side has stopped playing fair. Around here we've got plenty of ranchers and families who've worked the same land for four hundred years on nothing but a word and a promise. We've also got plenty of newer folks, weekend people, transients passing through. The Chama Valley runs on both kinds now, and sometimes those worlds collide in a Bode's parking lot or a restaurant till over fifty dollars. You can build something solid on rules and paperwork, sure. But you can't build it as fast as you can tear it down.
