A death in a parking lot, a man sleeping in a cardboard box, another walking free on bail after a shooting. That's the blotter this week up and down the valley, and it's the kind of string that makes you stop and think about what's happening to these small towns. We've all known loss and hard luck around here, but there's something different about the way trouble is showing up now, messier and more desperate than the old struggles most of us grew up with. The land-grant families who've held this country for generations, the ranchers and working people who built something here, they're still here, but something else is moving in alongside them. We don't have easy answers, and we won't find them in the blotter. But we won't solve anything by looking away either.
