When a man gets hauled in front of a judge on threatening charges and the judge decides he stays locked up without bail, that's a message about how serious things have gotten, and it hits different in a place this size where everybody knows everybody. The rest of the page fills up the way it always does this time of year, with obits of folks who built this valley and the high school teams running hard into fall, but that one decision by the court sits heavy underneath it all. You don't hold someone without bail because of words alone, not in New Mexico, so whatever went down with that teenager must have spooked the people who heard about it enough to make them want him behind bars while the case works through. The valley's grown enough that we've got more strangers passing through, more conflict you wouldn't have seen twenty years back, and that's the trade we make for not being completely isolated anymore. Still, on a week like this one, you notice it.
