Dora Garcia and Ralph Martinez, gone now, carried forward something that doesn't get talked about much anymore—the kind of staying power it takes to live in this country for a lifetime. Both names are woven through decades of these valleys, the kind of roots that run deeper than any newcomer's Instagram feed ever will. We lose people like that and the landscape gets quieter, even if you can't quite put your finger on why. Meanwhile, down in Santa Fe the Moving Arts Show at the Lensic sold out, which is fine, and probably means some of those weekend people will drift up this way soon looking for authenticity they can afford. The two aren't the same thing. Never are.

Dora L. Garcia, 90, a longtime resident of Guachupangue and recently of Apple Valley in Española, NM, died on August 19, 2026 from complications of sepsis. Her daughter served as her dedicated caretaker through her final days.
Ralph C. Martinez, 56, a lifelong resident of Chimayó, NM, passed away on August 22, 2026 following a brief battle with cancer. He is remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend to many in his community.
Moving Arts Show at Lensic Sells Out
Moving Arts Española wrapped up its summer arts programming with a sold-out performance of El Agua es Vida on August 9 at Santa Fe's Lensic Performing Arts Center. The show featured students and instructors who spent months rehearsing under the creative direction of the organization's leadership.
