July up here means a lot of things, but seeing the city put real weight behind Disability Pride Month says something about who we're becoming in this part of the state. It's easy enough to put up a proclamation and move on, but these conversations matter more than people think, especially in a region where land-grant families have deep roots and tight knots of kinship. Everybody knows everybody, which cuts both ways, and that same closeness that's kept this country alive for four centuries means accessibility and inclusion aren't abstract policy questions, they're about your neighbor, your cousin, someone at Bode's counter. The food help programs running through the summer are part of the same story, really. This country has always taken care of its own, but taking care means looking straight at who's getting left behind, and then doing something about it.

City Celebrates Disability Pride Month in July
Española became the third New Mexico city to officially recognize Disability Pride Month when the Española City Council approved a proclamation at its July 28 meeting. The recognition was championed by Eli Fresquez, Board president of Disability Pride New Mexico, a nonprofit organization.
