Violence over nothing—a cigarette, a workplace argument that turns into hands around somebody's throat—tells you something about the pressure cooker this country has become. You can blame the heat, blame close quarters in small towns, blame whatever you want, but when two men end up in front of a judge over that kind of rage, it's worth asking what's really breaking. The Chama Valley and Abiquiú country run on work and family and knowing your neighbors, but somewhere along the line some of us stopped knowing how to let things go. Meanwhile the fishing's good if you've got time to get out there and cool off, and maybe that's the real news worth remembering.
