Ty's Take

Election season up here tends to move slower than down in Albuquerque or Santa Fe, which gives a man time to think about what actually matters when somebody comes through asking for your vote. The gubernatorial race is starting to take shape, and you'll see the GOP ticket making its way north through the counties soon enough—that's the rhythm of things. But out here in Rio Arriba, where the land grants still mean something and water rights and grazing leases still decide who eats and who doesn't, candidates need to understand they're not just running against each other. They're running against the everyday concern of whether this place stays livable for the people who've been here for generations, or whether it becomes something else entirely. The Chama Valley and Abiquiú country will listen, same as we always do, but we'll be measuring words against what we see done.
