Ty's Take

You don't need much to shake a valley this size—a few names, a few items walked out of stores that weren't paid for, and suddenly everybody's doing the math on who knew what and when. The shoplifting ring that just turned up isn't some big-city operation, but it doesn't have to be to hurt. In a stretch of country where Bode's and the other small outfits are the spine of what holds communities together, theft hits different than it does down in the city. It's personal. It means the owner's watching closer now, maybe less trusting of folks who've shopped there for years. Most of this valley runs on a handshake and a reputation that takes decades to build and no time to wreck. Whatever the details end up being, that's the real cost.
