Sentencing day in the valley always leaves things quieter than they should be—the kind of quiet that comes after somebody's future gets decided in a courtroom sixty miles away, and everybody who knew them has to reckon with what that means for their own backyard. A quarter-century is a long time to think about what went wrong, and longer still for a family to live with the hole it leaves behind. Up here where everybody's connected by blood or land or both, you don't get the luxury of distant news—it's your cousin's ex, your kid's teacher's brother, somebody you've seen at Bode's. The other case, the one about somebody trying vehicle doors after dark, that's the reminder that trouble doesn't always announce itself, and that neighbors watching out for neighbors still matters in country like this where the next house might be five miles down the road.
