Carol Ann Knapp Foreman spent her life in this valley—the kind of person who knew everybody's name at the feed store and remembered which families had been here since before the interstates came through. Those aren't small things in a place like Las Cruces, where the old agricultural roots and the new university town are always negotiating who we're going to be. When someone like that passes, you lose more than a name in the obituary; you lose a keeper of the place's memory, someone who understood both the Spanish and English sides of Mesilla Valley without making it complicated. The community she leaves behind is a little less connected today, a little more dependent on the rest of us to do what she did—pay attention, show up, remember.
