Ty's Take

The governor's drought declaration came down today, and if you've been watching the sky the way most of us have—dry as a popcorn fart since last spring—it lands about three months too late. What matters now is what comes next: whether the state actually moves money and water around to keep the farms and dairies operating, or whether this becomes one more official stamp on a problem we've been living with since before anyone in Santa Fe was paying attention. The fire danger's real enough that people need to take it seriously, but out here the bigger worry is always the same one. We don't have enough water to fight fires or grow chile or keep the livestock alive, and no emergency order changes that math.
